Summary:A survey of diabetes mellitus cases at the De La Salle University Medical Center and the Well-Care Diagnostic Clinic for January 1994 to December 1995 was conducted. A total of 559 cases were noted. There were more cases of Non-Insulin Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM) with 96.96 % while Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM) comprised only 3.04 % of the cases studied. Females were the majority of the diabetics with 331 cases (59.21 %) while there were 228 male cases (40.08%). The age group of 40-60 years had the most number of cases with 268 cases (47.94%) while the age bracket of birth-12 years had the least incidence with only 1 case (0.18 %). Diabetics with family history of diabetes had the more cases (295 cases or 52.78 %) while acquired diabetes mellitus had 264 cases or 47.22 %. Of those cases with an unhealthy lifestyle or those with vices (smoking, alcoholic beverage drinking or both), there were more males than females in all cases except in smoking, wherein females had 45 cases (19.51 %) as compared to the males with 36 cases (15.65 %). Diabetes mellitus must be given proper attention for this disease is a life-threatening one and can be avoided with the proper diet, exercise, a healthy lifestyle and an early detection.
