Summary: | The effects of Arcangelisia flava bark decoction on the estrous cycle of female mice was determined after oral administration of the decoction for a period of one month. Twelve female albino mice were used in the study and they were divided into four groups with three replicates on each group. The three sublethal doses determined were 1 mL/kg body weight, 2 mL/kg body weight, and 3 mL/kg body weight. The first group served as the control group, the second group received 1 mL/kg body weight, the third group received 2mL/kg body weight, and the fourth group received 3 mL/kg body weight dose of the decoction. The control group received water alone. Vaginal smears were examined twice a day for a period of one month to determine the stage in the estrous cycle. Results showed that there was a decrease in the number of estrous cycles in all treated groups and they were significantly lower than the untreated group. The proestrus stages of the treated group which received 3 mL of the decoction had a prolonged mean duration (in hours) and it differed from the control group by 38.67 hours. |
