Summary: | Crude extracts of roots of Vanda sanderiana, Vanda luzonica, Trichoglottis philippinensis and Dendrobium sanderae were screened for the presence of antimicrobial activities. The extracts were prepared using distilled water, 95% methanol and 95% ethanol as solvents. The modified Kirby Bauer Disc Agar diffusion technique was employed in the antimicrobial assay. Clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans were used as test microorganisms. Three trials were done in the study. The crude methanol and ethanol root extract of Vanda luzonica and Vanda sanderiana inhibited the growth of S. aureus. Extracts from other orchids showed inhibitory effect on some test microorganisms. Nonetheless, variation of results among trials was observed. Such observation may be due to variations in the orchid species used. |
