The effect of Swietenia mahogani Jacq. (mahogany) seeds on the blood cholesterol level of Mus musculus albino mice
This study examined the effect of locally available Swietenia mahogani (mahogany) seeds on the blood cholesterol level of albino mice. The subjects used were forty-five acclimatized albino mice with weights ranging from 0.5 to 1.2 kg. The mice were randomly grouped into five: Control 1 (negative con...

This study examined the effect of locally available Swietenia mahogani (mahogany) seeds on the blood cholesterol level of albino mice. The subjects used were forty-five acclimatized albino mice with weights ranging from 0.5 to 1.2 kg. The mice were randomly grouped into five: Control 1 (negative control) given a regular food diet Control 2 (positive control) given a high saturated fat diet and pulverized mahogany seeds in 100 mg, 300 mg, and 500 mg dosages, respectively. At the end of the first week, the blood cholesterol levels of three (3) mice from each group were determined using the Liebermann-Burchard method. The duration of the study was three weeks. Results showed that all treatment groups which were given dosages of pulverized mahogany seeds had a significant decrease in blood cholesterol at .05 level of significance, compared to Treatment 1. However, there was no significant difference between the blood cholesterol level of treatment 2 and treatment 3. In conclusion, mahogany seeds was found to have a significant effect in lowering the blood cholesterol level of albino mice. Moreover, the dosage relationship showed that the higher the dosage given to the mice, the lower is total blood cholesterol level becomes. 1997-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_bachelors/1605 Bachelor's Theses English Animo Repository Mahogany Seeds Blood cholesterol Mice Medicinal plants |
