Summary:For the period of January to December 1996, the Warehouse and Stores Department of the Feeds Division of Swift Foods, Inc. incurred repairs cost for their forklifts amounting to Php 541,569. Several causes were identified that contributed to this problem. Among these, the three main causes were the old age of the forklifts, insufficient number of forklifts available for use in the six warehouses and the machines are used for hours more than its operating time. A proposed system was developed for the Warehouse and Stores Department. Firstly, it is proposed for them to buy three new forklifts to replace the unusable ones. Secondly, a schedule of the use of the forklifts was developed in order to balance the workload of the machines. Finally, Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) was incorporated in the schedule so that breakdowns will be lessened and the efficiency of the forklifts will increase. The proposed system was justified further through the analysis of the costs that would be incurred and the benefits that would be gained by the company. A net present value at the end of the economic life was computed to be equivalent to Php 38,238.
