Description
Summary:Abstract. Social workers today are not only visible whenever calamity strikes. They do more than distributing relief goods in time of need. Nowadays, they also take part in the legislation and implementation of laws and regulations affecting men, women and children. They spearhead the fight against child abuse, they defend battered women and they are temporary custodians of abandoned children. Moreover, the money collected from fund-raising projects are loaned for livelihood projects and for organizing day care centers where they help improve the poor's standard of living and protect children. The social workers are the frontliners in protecting people, their rights and their lives. The photoessay is about the charity work and the working environment of Eugenia Celario (Ate Eugene), a social worker for 15 years from the Educational Research Development Assistance (ERDA) Foundation, Incorporated. ERDA is a non-government organization and is a member of the National Council of Social Development (NCSD). The pictures were taken at Baseco, Port Area, Manila and Valderama, Tondo, Manila-two depressed communities under the supervision of Ate Eugene. The 24 11 X 14 all horizontal prints basically show the work of Ate Eugene which includes giving financial aid to those families who wish to send their kids to school, conducting seminars on health, family planning and other topics related to community development, and attending rallies related to children's rights.
