Description
Summary:Abstract. Komiks have become the most accessible reading fare (Roxas and Arevalo 48) in the public in these modern times. It has almost replaced the novel and short story as the people's reading material, but this does not mean that it is wholly accepted by the entire populace. Some people do not consider the komiks as something to be taken seriously, a notion that Soledad S. Reyes wants to correct. Research shows that komiks are an important factor in the reading experience of many people, as it educates and informs them as well as entertain them, which also characterize the mainstream form of literature. This gave Reyes an idea to propose a change of the definition of literature in order to accommodate this latest form of literature. This paper entitled An Analysis of the Deconstruction of Some Aspects of Modern Philippine Society in Pugad Baboy by Pol Medina, Jr. is an attempt to follow through Reyes' view of the komiks by critically analyzing it like any form of literature like poetry and short stories. The paper aims to prove that Pugad Baboy by Pol Medina, Jr. consists of comic strips which presents a deconstructive outlook on some aspects of Philippine society, namely men and women, law enforcers and lawbreakers, and NPA and AFP. For each of these aspects, three strips are chosen to be analyzed in the paper. In order to prove this hypothesis. Derridean Deconstruction is utilized as the basis for the analysis as it is concerned with the deconstruction and analysis of binaries, which is the focal point shown in the selected strips. The analysis executed in this paper is the deconstruction of the images and the language in each strip, box by box which will both show how it is deconstructing that aspect of society in the strip and what it is deconstructing. This analysis will show whether the binaries in the strip are inverted and/or reinverted, which will prove the thesis that Pugad Baboy deconstructs some aspects of Philippine society.
