Description
Summary:Heroes have existed since the oldest of days and they still exist until today. Joseph Campbell has proposed that heroes all go through a Monomyth where the hero departs to a special world, is initiated to become a hero, and returns home as one. This framework is based on epics around the world and is hence subject to being called outdated. But heroes today are not that different from those of old -- they all fight evil in the name of good, and this leads us to think that Joseph Campbell might not be outdated. Hence, we study the heroes of today, a hero who appeals to us, a hero in a fantasy world. We use videogames as our medium because they make us closer to becoming our heroes and they are one of the newest media through which heroes exist. RPGs are the games which position us with the hero we choose Final Fantasay X (FFX) as our RPG because it captures our fantasy concern. Our hero in this game is Tidus. We want to see if his medium enhances the Monomyth. To do these, we identify the major parts of the Momomyth (the Departure, the Initiation, and the Return) in Tidus' journey as well as the elements that comprise these parts and how aspects of the medium add to the journey. We hope to better understand heroes and become heroes ourselves by doing this study. We limit ourselves to Tidus' journey in FFX. We equip ourselves with Joseph Campbell's Momomyth as well as other works that it has influenced. We take a look at the heroic journey of Tidus in FFX and identify the elements of the Momomyth present in it. At the end, we answer whether Joseph Campbell's Monomyth is indeed out of date or not. That is the plan. Now prepare yourselves.
