Summary:The study was done to test for the effects of minimum and normal dosage of Circulan to the cardiovascular system of cholesterol-induced male Sprague-Dawley rats (Rattus norvegicus). A total of 36 laboratory-bred male Sprague-Dawley rats (Rattus norvegicus) weighing an average of 128.05±20.38g was used in the experiment. Circulan was administered through oral gavage and in order to remove the element of stress induced by gavaging, all rats were gavaged (including the controls with corn oil). The test animals were equally divided into six groups each group was exposed to different feeding regimens and Circulan treatment: Group 1 (Control) Group 2 (Circulan Minimum Dosage) Group 3 (Circulan Normal Dosage) Group 4 (Lard) Group 5 (Lard and Circulan Minimum Dosage and Group 6 (Lard and Circulan Normal Dosage). The study made use of only the descriptive and qualitative aspects of the electrocardiogram it is a diagnostic tool used for recording the heart electrical activity in order to sense for any abnormalities and alterations in the proper functioning of the heart, the procedures done involved an open heart set-up. The results showed normal rates and rhythm for majority of the test animals, only a few subjects manifested tachycardia, bradycardia and other irregularities showing that cholesterol had minimal or no effect in the proper functioning of the heart. Rhythm was also found to have varied results not showing any pattern that is of much relevance to the study. Circulan was found to promote good blood circulation by lowering the total cholesterol levels amongst the test subjects. An observation was also made regarding the higher lipid lowering effect of normal dosage of Circulan as compared to the minimum dosage, and through the ECG tracings it was shown that the higher the dosage of Circulan the higher was the activity of the heart.
