| Summary: | In the Philippines, the terms tomboy and bakla describe lesbian women and gay men, and are often used synonymously to label transgender people (Nadal and Corpuz 166). There is little to no information about Filipina lesbians or Filipina transgender people (Nadal and Corpuz 167). One of the reasons is that homosexuals feel that it is inappropriate to disclose their sexual orientation to their parents who have discouraged discourse regarding sexual matters. Another reason why homosexuals choose to remain in the closet is because they think other people will use their sexuality against them (242). There are a lot of lesbians and gays that have positively benefited from coming out of unfortunately family members and other people shun those who are struggling with their sexual preference (Corrigan and Matthews 237-238). |
