Public maternal health care has been a worldwide issue for several years. According to the World Health Organization, 385,000 women die due to pregnancy and childbirth annually. (qtd. Slide 3). Because of this, maternal health care has been included in the Millennium Development Goals as an attempt of the United Nations for concerned countries to resolve this issue. Despite the attempt of the United Nations and the local Philippine Government to improve public maternal health care, it remained a pressing issue due to the governments lack of sufficient funds to upgrade all health care facilities and infrastructures. With the limited number of doctors serving the public, queues at the health centers became longer by the hour. With the limited financial resources, lying in clinic staff found ways in order to provide the basic medical supplier during child birth. This photo essay examined issues on public maternal health care system in District V of Manila and how the medical staff dealt with such problems to be able to accommodate the needs of expecting mothers. This photo essay aimed to shed some light on women capable of conception so that they may have a better understanding of the issues on public maternal health care so that they could contribute in alleviating the problem. This photo essay was also the proponents personal attempt for the target audience to understand the coping methods of indigent expecting mothers for social awareness.
