Description
Summary:This study would examine three collections of tales of Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, namely: Tales for a Rainy Night (De La Salle University Press, 1993), Where Only The Moon Rages: 9 tales (Anvil, 1994), and Catch a Falling Star (Anvil, 1999). The main objective is to do a structuralist-poststructuralist reading on these tales. The three collections of her tales are necessary to fully determine the structure of her work. As such, the following questions are important for the study: First,, what is the structure underlying these tales? Next, how do these structures of tales position the reader of his/her understanding of what it means to a Filipino/a? Isagani Cruz's A Morphology of the Filipino Epic would be used as a framework for the structuralist reading, containing eleven functions common in Filipino epics. Consequently, Antony Easthope's subject positions/ing would be used for the poststructuralist part of the thesis. The process in doing the study would be as follows: first, is to point out the structure commonly used in these tales. Through the reading of the three collections of tales, the structure she uses must be seen generally. Next, is to examine it with A Morphology of the Filipino Epic. Using Easthope's subject positions/ing, the idelogy perpetuated in the text to the readers would be indentified. Lastly, a conclusion is made on how the Filipino/a is represented within these tales.
