| Summary: | This thesis is the study of the role of the male protagonist in female centered texts such as Chick Literature. It will examine how the males are depicted in texts that are traditionally on, for and by women. Masculinity Studies will be the guiding framework for this study.
Masculinity Studies or Men's Studies examines the tension and complexity of the relationship between hegemonic masculinities (the prevalent idea of a real man ina specific time period and culture) and subordinate masculinities (masculinities that, in a specific time period and culture, challenges or deviates from the real man ideal). Through this, the concept of an ideal Filipino man was discussed in relation to the text studies, Vince's Life series, a Philippine Chick Literature Novel Trilogy. It aims to show whether or not the males in these texts serve to represent the Filipino masculinity, or to represent a feminized version that appeals to its target audience. |
