Description
Summary:This creative writing thesis is an attempt to portray the Philippine colonial history, as well as to help put into practice theories and issues behind history writing using poetry. The collection was entitled Of flags and war : a scrapbook of Philippine Colonial war in order to focus the discussion of Philippine colonial history on the topic of War-- war preparations, actual combat, and the aftermath of war. This is in order to highlight the experiences of the Filipino under colonial rule, both in a personal and national aspect. The collection would try to use poetry as tool for reenacting, splicing, and editing the past, and at the same time subtly providing a commentary either about the event or about history itself. It would borrow face from historical evidence such as memoirs, news articles, and biographies as well as representations of the Philippine life and culture that may or may not be directly relevant to Philippine colonial history such as cookbook recipes, journals, interview transcripts, and even road signs. They would take the form of poetry, by this, I mean, it contains the heightened language, image, tension, and musicality that poetry requires in its construction.
