One Direction is a British boyband formed in the U.K. reality show., X-factor, produced by Simon Cowell in 2010. The popular boyband came in third place in the talent show, yet went on to make a breakthrough in the global music scene. A year following their formation and loss in the X-Factor, the band released their first single, 'What makes you beautiful , which unexpectedly shot them to fame across the U.K. and Asia and, eventually in the United States. As the U.K.-based boyband continues its rise to fame, so do their image and branding affect the popular culture in the Philippines. Employing John Fiske's approach to popular culture and Rolando Tolentino's approach to subculture, this study aims to: (1) learn how One Direction appeals to their fans, particularly their Filipino fans (2) examine the available One Direction content to see how One Direction is packaged to sell to their audiences and (3) understand the ways in which the Filipino fans identify themselves with each other and the ways they make spaces for themselves within the local popular culture.
