Isolation and characterization of facultative methylotrophic (FM) bacteria from urinary tract infection (UTI) diagnosed patients from Rizal Medical Center-Pasig City and determination of its antibiogram profile

The study was able to obtain a total of eleven (11) facultative methylotrophic isolates acquired from urinary tract infection diagnosed urine samples collected from Rizal Medical Center-Pasig City. Luisa Angela R. The study was able to obtain a total of eleven (11) facultative methylotrophic isolates acquired from urinary tract infection diagnosed urine samples collected from Rizal Medical Center-Pasig City. All the isolates undergone a series of tests to characterize it phenotypically. Phenotypic characterization involved morphological characterization of isolates microscopically, colonially, and biochemically. Microscopic characterization showed that the isolates were either bacillus, coccus or cocci-bacillus in shape and all of the isolates was negative in gram reaction. On the other hand, biochemical characterization involved 42 biochemical tests, which includes the use of bioMérieux API 20 NE & E kit and conventional catalase test. Conventional catalase test showed that all the isolates were negative for the test. bioMérieux API 20 NE & E kit were also used to identify the species of the isolates obtained and revealed four (4) genera Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae spp. ozaenae and Serratia liquefaciens. Furthermore, after all the isolates were identified, antimicrobial susceptibility testing using Kirby Baur method was performed. Seven (7) antibiotics for UTI were used and revealed that the identified species was highly susceptible to Azithromycin, Norfloxacin, Levofloxacin and Ofloxacin but highly resistant to Trimethoprim, Trimethoprim/ Sulfamethoxazole combination drug and Nitrofurantoin. To conclude, the study was able to establish the presence of facultative methylotrophic bacteria from urine of UTI diagnosed patients. Furthermore, the study was able to show that antibiotics such as macrolides and fluoroquinolones are effective in treating UTI caused by the species identified in the study. 2016-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_bachelors/3008 Bachelor's Theses English Animo Repository Biology
