Description
Summary:Kamutmut is an ethno-medicinal plant that is used by local residents in Pampanga to treat skin infections. The current study investigated the antibacterial and antifungal potentials of the ethanol leaf extract of Kamutmut using the disc agar diffusion method. The antibacterial activity of the crude extract was tested against the drug susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC25923), methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), extendedspectrum β-lactam (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli, drug-susceptible Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 22853), metallo-β-lactamase (MBL)- producing P. aeruginosa (IMP- 1) and ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae. The antifungal activity was tested against the dermatophyte Trichophyton rubrum and the yeast Candida albicans. The plant showed antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa (ATCC 22853), S. aureus (ATCC 29213), ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae and MRSA. However, there was no antibacterial activity shown against MBL-producing P. aeruginosa (IMP-1) and ESBL-producing E. coli. In addition, the plant did not show antifungal activity against C. albicans and T. rubrum.
