Summary: | This research project deals with one of the most serious threat to the proper operation, functions, and growth of industrial plants---the inorganic or mineral acid corrosion. Accordingly, this study investigates the rate of corrosion of certain industrial containers materials and the aftereffects of its surface due to acid corrosion. The experimentation consists of the determination of the corrosion rate of Type 304 (also known as the 18-8) stainless steel and ordinary mild steel, totally immersed in hydrochloric and sulfuric acids at different concentrations. Each test consists of three metal coupons of the same type. The time variations for each test and the stagnant conditions were properly controlled. The possible presence of pits and cracks, the oxide film formations, the variations in the concentration of the solution after each test were also evaluated. The test solutions were analyzed by acid base titration. The entire investigation process was deaerated, therefore impeding the atmospheric interference during the analysis of the corrosion rate. |
