Taxonomy and screening for antimicrobial activities of selected marine algal species from Talaga East, Mabini, Batangas

Macrobenthic algae were collected from Talaga East, Mabini, Batangas, Philippines from August to October, 1993. These algae were preserved, identified and classified based on their gross morphology.A total of (20) species, belonging to three (3) divisions, three (3) classes, six (6) orders, nine (9)...

Evangelista, Rosene A. Macrobenthic algae were collected from Talaga East, Mabini, Batangas, Philippines from August to October, 1993. These algae were preserved, identified and classified based on their gross morphology.A total of (20) species, belonging to three (3) divisions, three (3) classes, six (6) orders, nine (9) families and eleven (11) genera were collected. Under division Rhodophyta there were five (5) species namely Actinotrichia fragilis, Galaxaura oblongata, Galaxaura subfruticulosa, Halymenia durvillaei and Acanthophora specifera Division Phaeophyta wit seven (7) species namely Padina australis, Sargassum cristaefolium, Sargassum myriocystum, Sargassum angustifolium, Sargassum granuliferum, Sargassum ilicifolium and Sargassum siliquosum and Division Chlorophyta with eight (8) species namely Enteromorpha intestinales, Ulva lactuca, Caulerpa taxifolia, Halimeda opuntia, Halimeda discoidea, Halimeda tuna, Halimeda macroloba and Udotea orientalis. Extracts from twelve (12) seaweed species were tested for the presence of antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans using the Disc Agar Diffusion Method. Methanol was used as the control.Halymenia durvillaei extract inhibited Staphylococcus aureus (12.22 mm.), Streptococcus pyogenes (10.67 mm.) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (11.89 mm.). Ulva lactuca extract inhibited Staphylococcus aureus (7 mm.), Streptococcus pyogenes (7 mm.) and Escherichia coli (7 mm.). Enteromorpha intestinales, Halimeda discoidea and Padina australis;"extracts inhibited Staphylococcus aureus (11.44 mm.), Streptococcus pyogenes (11.67 mm.) and Escherichia coli (11.44 mm.), respectively. Candida albicans was not inhibited by any of the seaweed extracts. The control used showed no zones of inhibition against all the test microorganisms." 1994-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_bachelors/3840 Bachelor's Theses English Animo Repository Marine algae--Philippines--Batangas--Morphology Biology
