Summary: | The study focused on determining the advantages and disadvantages of using coffee hull and rice straw as a medium for the cultivation of Volvariella volvacea mushroom species. Three parameters were considered, namely: (1) five different ratios of coffee hull and rice straw (2) sterile and non-sterile substrate and (3) three different composting days. The basis for determining growth of mycelia was the cumulative ramification over a span of 10 days while the basis for determining growth of fruiting bodies was the fresh weight at the mature basidiocarp stage. The statistical test used to analyze the results were: (1) Completely Randomized Design (CRD) (2) Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) - for variables greater than 5 and (3) Least Significant Difference test (LSD) - for variables less than or equal to 5. Test results indicated that the coffee hull (C) and rice straw (R) ratios of OC: 1R and 1C:2R gave the highest yield for mycelial growth and fruiting bodies, respectively. The best composting period was obtained at 0 days. Sterilization of substrate was found to be suitable for mycelial growth while non-sterile substrate appeared to be adequate for fruiting bodies. The pH value during maximum mycelial growth was determined at 8,7 maximum yield of fruiting bodies ranged from 9.5 to 9.8 at 29 to 31 centigrade temperature range. |
