Preliminary assessment of the physico-chemical characteristics and primary productivity of two sites in Taal Lake in Barangay Panhulan, Agoncillo, Batangas

Measurements of primary productivity and the physical and chemical parameters in Lake Taal over a period of six months, from November 1994 to April 1995 were closely surveyed. The physical and chemical parameters were temperature (0c), pH (units), salinity (0/00), conductivity (umhos/cm), water hard...

Description
Summary:Measurements of primary productivity and the physical and chemical parameters in Lake Taal over a period of six months, from November 1994 to April 1995 were closely surveyed. The physical and chemical parameters were temperature (0c), pH (units), salinity (0/00), conductivity (umhos/cm), water hardness (mg/L), alkalinity (mg CaC03), dissolved oxygen (mg/L), nitrate (mg/L), phosphate (mg/L), and chlorophyll a (mg/L). Two sampling stations were chosen and tested for each parameters.Primary productivity was determined using the light and dark bottles technique which involved measurement of the dissolved oxygen content in Biological Oxygen Demand (B.O.D.) bottles. The results of the study were compared to the standards set by Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Based on the classification of Lake Taal which is both for recreational use and for propagation of aquatic resources, the physico-chemical properties of the water samples conformed with the standards set by DENR except in the nitrate (0.035 mg/L) and orthophosphate (0.085 mg/L) values.
