Comparative study of Areca catechu L. (betel nut), Momordica charantia L. (ampalaya), and Zingiber officinale (ginger) on killing activity against Ascaris suum in vitro
Ascaris suum parasite were collected from a number of intestinal samples which came from the abattoir of Milais Lechon and Ping Pingis Lechon in La Loma, Quezon City. Summary: | Ascaris suum parasite were collected from a number of intestinal samples which came from the abattoir of Milais Lechon and Ping Pingis Lechon in La Loma, Quezon City. The worms were treated using 3.33, 5 and 10 concentration of decoctioned Momordica charantia L. (ampalaya) 6, 9 and 12 concentration of pulverized Areca Catechu L. (betel nut) and only 50 concentration of extracted Zingiber officinale (ginger). Three trials of the said concentrations of ampalaya, betel nut and ginger were compared against 3 trials of the control group. Daily monitoring was done to find out the percentage mortality of A. suum in different plant preparations. 3.33, 5 and 10 concentration of ampalaya and 6, 9 and 12 concentration of betel nut showed insignificant killing effect on A. suum (p = 0.430 p = 0.2850) respectively as compared to the control group, while 50 concentration of ginger showed a significant killing effect on A. suum ( p = 0.005380).The result of the present study showed that there was significant increase mortality with those treated with ginger, hence, there was insignificant increase in mortality in those treated with 3.33, 5 and 10 concentration of ampalaya and 6, 9 and 12 concentration of betel nut, since concentration that were used were below 50. However, the same result with ginger may have been attained if 50 concentration was also used with ampalaya and betel nut. |
