Summary: | Seawater, substrate and leaf samples of Sonneratia caseolaris and Avicennia officinalis were collected from two mangrove areas, Reyna and Matuod, in Talin Bay, Batangas from July to December, 1995. Samples were digested and analyzed for cadmium and lead content by atomic absorption spectrophotometry using GBC Varian 903 Single Beam AAS. Mean concentration of cadmium in seawater was higher in Reyna (0.025 mg/L) than Matuod (0.020 mg/L). Mean lead content was higher in Matuod (1.348 mg/L) than Reyna (0.0444 mg/L). Cadmium and lead concentration of substrate was higher in seawater. Mean value of cadmium in substrate was higher in Matuod (0.073 mg/L) than Reyna (0.058 mg/L). Mean concentration level of lead was higher in Reyna (1.401 mg/L) than Matuod (1.307 mg/L). Both species of mangrove leaves were found to accumulate more lead than cadmium. Mean concentration level of lead for S. caseolaris was highest in October (1.025 mg/L) and lowest during July (0.378 mg/L). For cadmium, it was highest in August (0.078 mg/L) and lowest in December (0.015 mg/L). Mean lead content of A. officinalis was highest in September (0.748 mg/L) and lowest in December (0.473 mg/L). For cadmium, it was highest in September (0.080 mg.L) and lowest in December (0.020 mg/L). In general, lead had higher concentration levels in all parameters compared to cadmium. Mean levels for substrate were the highest among the parameters, namely, seawater and mangrove leaves. |
