A survey on the prevalence of Babesia sp. in wild rats (Rattus tanizumi) of Calamba, Laguna

Two hundred samples of field rats (Rattus tanizumi) were collected from Barrio Halang, Calamba, Laguna. Giemsa-stained thin blood films were prepared from each sample for microscopic examination. Prevalence rate was 5.5 representing 11 positive cases with percent parasitemia ranging between 0.4 to 3...

Recio, Conrado A. Two hundred samples of field rats (Rattus tanizumi) were collected from Barrio Halang, Calamba, Laguna. Giemsa-stained thin blood films were prepared from each sample for microscopic examination. Prevalence rate was 5.5 representing 11 positive cases with percent parasitemia ranging between 0.4 to 3.6. Microscopic examination of thin blood films showed that Babesia parasites were of varied shapes: in oval, elongate, irregular forms and some of which looked degenerate. Eight (9.1) males and three (2.7) females were found to be infected. Infection was noted highest (24.1) in rats with body weights ranging between 176-205 grams. The data seem to suggest that mature male rats are more susceptible to Babesia sp. infection. 1996-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_bachelors/4144 Bachelor's Theses English Animo Repository Babesiosis Rats--Infections Biology
