Description
Summary:Female Ascaris suis, approximately 30 cm. in length, were submerged to sub-lethal concentrations of Terminalia citrina, pyrantel and mebendazole to determine and compare its histologic effects. The worms were submerged to 3 and 2 of T. citrina's leaf decoction, 0.05 pyrantel and 6 mebendazole. Artificial Perienteric Fluid (APF) was used as the diluent. For the control, pure APF was used. Submersion was done for a period of 24 hours. Nine worms were exposed per treatment with three worms per replicate. Results showed that the tissue sections that exhibited detachment of muscle layer from the hypodermis were from worms exposed to 3 and 2 of the leaf decoction. Occurrence of numerous cytoplasmic vacuoles were observed from tissue sections of worms exposed to 3 and 2 of leaf decoction and mebendazole. Tissue sections of worms exposed to pyrantel did not exhibit any notable histologic alteration. No histologic alterations were observed in the cuticle, hypodermis and reproductive organs of all tissue sections.
