Antibiograms and conjugative transferability of drug resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates from patients of the Makati Medical Center
Twenty-three Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates, obtained from patients of the Makati Medical Center, were tested for their sensitivity to the following antibiotics: amikacin, nalidixic acid, tobramycin, neomycin, carbenicillin, gentamicin, streptomycin and sulphamethoxazole. Summary: | Twenty-three Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates, obtained from patients of the Makati Medical Center, were tested for their sensitivity to the following antibiotics: amikacin, nalidixic acid, tobramycin, neomycin, carbenicillin, gentamicin, streptomycin and sulphamethoxazole. Results showed that all of the isolates were resistant to at least 2 drugs. Of the 23 isolates, 17.39% were resistant to 2 of the test drugs, 52.17% to 3 drugs, 21.74% to 4 drugs and 8.70% to 5 drugs. Considering each drug used, 4.35% isolates were amikacin-resistant, 26.07% isolates were carbenicillin-resistant, 10.00% isolates were streptomycin-resistant, 78.26% isolates were nalidixic acid-resistant, 17.39% isolates were neomycin-resistant, 91.30% isolates were sulphamethoxazole-resistant and 4.35 % isolates were tobramycin-resistant. The conjugative transferability of the drug-resistance in five isolates was also tested. Three out of five isolates transferred their resistance to streptomycin to the recipient, E. coli SF 800. |
