Screening for antimicrobial properties of selected cyanobacteria extracts

Six cyanobacteria samples namely Nostoc, Anabaena, Scytonema, Colothrix, Fischerella and Tolypothrix were obtained from the International Rice Research Institute and were cultivated for 21 to 25 days. The crude extracts using 95% ETOH, 100% methanol and distilled water from these cyanobacteria were...

The crude extracts using 95% ETOH, 100% methanol and distilled water from these cyanobacteria were obtained. These were then tested for antimicrobial activity against the test organisms Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans and Escherichia coli. The results showed that Fischerella, using the solvent 95% ethanol, had the best result against the test organism Staphylococcus aureus with regards to its zone of inhibition and activity index. This may be due to the presence of an active compound such as Fischerellin A, ambigol A and ambigol B which have been known to possess antibacterial activity. 1997-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_bachelors/4116 Bachelor's Theses English Animo Repository Cyanobacteria Cyanobacteria—Biotechnology Biology
