Effects of strenuous physical activities on selected urinary characteristics of the DLSU men's volleyball athletes.

Individual urine specimens were gathered from 17 volleyball athletes for three consecutive training days. Only ten of them who provided data consistently were considered for the final analysis. Samples were collected before and after each practice and were immediately brought to the laboratory for chemical and physical tests. 70% of the subjects had significantly decreased urinary pH after undergoing strenuous activities. This was probably due to production of lactic acid causing higher level of acid metabolite excretion. 83% of the subjects had increased urinary protein content after prolonged heavy exercise. The specific gravity results showed that 80% of the subjects had increased level of urinary solute content after training which usually decreases due to reabsorption of body fluids. This result may be attributed to low fluid intake as required in the subjects' liquid control program. Post-exercise changes in the urinary characteristics of the athletes were significant with mostly a unit of increase or decrease in values. Those significant, the values were still within the acceptable limits and would not account for the existence of the detrimental effects on the kidney functions.
