Summary: | To help engineers and students in designing structural steel for beams and columns, the design aids for flexural and compression members for the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines (ASEP) Steel Handbook were done.
The design aids accomplished are the tables for: 1) allowable uniform loads (AUL) for laterally supported beams; 2) allowable stresses (AS) for compression members' aid; 3) allowable concentric loads (ACL) on columns.
The tables for AUL for laterally supported beams provide the total allowable uniformly distributed load a steel section can carry in kN. These tables are also applicable to laterally supported simple beams for concentrated loading conditions and properties for shear design and deflection.
The tables for AS for compression members are for the two specified yield stresses of steel i.e. Fy = 248 MPa and Fy = 345 MPa.
The tables for ACL on columns are tabulated considering effective lengths in meters. These tables also contain properties and factors for checking the strength about the strong axis, combined loading conditions and column stiffener requirements.
These design aids are patterned to the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Manual of Steel Construction, with primary purpose of simplifying the design procedures involving ASEP Steel Handbook. |
