The background of the study serves as a map to track the status of women in the Philippine cinema not only as actresses and film characters, but more importantly as producers and directors--two very important roles in the film industry. Some of Laurice Guillen's films feature women who are trapped within the patriarchal unconscious that has shaped Filipino society. A close reading of her films American Adobo, Santa Santita, and Tanging Yaman using Laura Mulvey's Visual Pleasure in Narrative Cinema examines the gaze given to the woman by the camera, male characters, and male spectators. My analysis reveals how Guillen tries to offer an alternative mode from the patriarchal unconscious through her narrative style and film techniques. This thesis offers to give voice not only to Laurice Guillen but also to all the women in the Philippine film industry. 2008-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_bachelors/5086 Bachelor's Theses English Animo Repository Laurice Guillen--Criticism and interpretation Motion picture producers and directors--Philippines Women in motion pictures Motion pictures and women--Philippines South and Southeast Asian Languages and Societies |
