Description
Summary:EMS Components Assembly Inc., under the EMS group of companies, is a manufacturing company that provides microelectronics assembly subcontracting. The company aims to be globally competitive through partnership and constant innovation in Quality, Productivity, Value Chain and Human Resources. The company was described by the partitions and linkages by persons, raw materials, information, method, equipment and utilities (PRIMEU). Given this, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats were identified. Upon assessment, it was evaluated that the problem that scored the highest was due to the unmet demand. Resting the problem statement:"The surface Mounting Technology (SMT) Line of EMS Components Assembly Inc. is experiencing on the average an 8.79% unmet output from April to November 2013 for the 2.5" PCB Main Boards associated with a cost of Php 223, 488.25Different causes to the problem were assessed and were subcategorized as due to man, machine and method. Restating those, these were due to the Shifting of Work, Occurrence of Defects, Change Over Time and Machine Breakdown. With the aid of the Pareto Chart, the contributions of each cause to the problem were quantified. At the end of the validation, it was found out that 9.96 % of the problem was contributed by the man-related causes, 29.75% by method and the biggest with 60.29% due to machine. Among the machine related causes, it was found out that the main probable cause is due to Machine Breakdown.Along with the different contributory causes, different solutions were then generated and evaluated using the Kepner-Tregoe Decision analysis (KTDA) tool. The different solutions per contributory causes were scored according to the musts and wants enumerated by the company.Follow the different solutions, an implementation plan will be established in order to effectively push through with the solution and be able to relay the costs and benefits per solution. As assessed, the implementation of the solutions up to its establishment would approximately be done in 8 weeks. The overall recommendation made was to go through with all possible solutions to fully eliminate the tendency of not meeting the monthly target output. Looking back at the problem location per process, going with the overall recommendation addresses all contributory causes to the problem. This recommendation will in turn be able to provide a new capacity of 4, 738,500 units per month. Cross referencing to the table, it satisfies the actual target output per month thus eliminating the problem. For future studies, the following recommendations are suggested to help in the improvement of the company:1. Feasibility study and assessment on plant expansion. The current layout of the plant maximizes the space for the 3 SMT lines. If plausible and cost effective, the expansion and investment on one whole line would help increase the output. 2.Future study and evaluation on new equipments and methods related to surface mounting technology. The components on the Printed Circuit Boards are used to be placed using the "through-hole" technology, it was only after the introduction of wave soldering that gave birth to the concept of surface mounting technology. It would be great if the study will be up to date with innovative processes and methods, if there is any.
