Summary:Reasonable energy planning often depends on multi-faceted factors such as economic, technical, environmental, and social aspects. Because of this, the demand of applying a multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) tool becomes a requirement. This work demonstrates the theory and application of analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and analytic network process (ANP) to energy planning in the Philippines. Furthermore, a comparative study of both methods was done by the researchers in order to determine the robustness of the model. The objective of the study is to apply the proposed decision models for the prioritization of the renewable energy resource for electricity generation and feedstock selection for bio-ethanol production in the country. Through the use of the "experts judgment" for data gathering, the collected judgments were converted into one collective judgment through the use of aggregated geometric mean method. The overall judgments were used as entries in pairwise comparison judgment matrices wherein the eigenvectors of priorities were obtained. The priority weights for the alternatives in both case studies were obtained through the supermatrix approach and were calculated through a macro-enabled Microsoft Excel. The results of the limit supermatrices provided the priority weights which revealed that the most preferred alternative for prioritization of renewable energy resource for electricity generation was hydroelectric energy from both AHP and ANP models. The results of the second case study revealed that the most preferred alternative was sugarcane from both AHP and ANP models. The results of the comparative study showed that the AHP approach can provide an approximation of the ANP approach. The study also showed that ANP increase the degree of dominance of the most desirable elements relative to the other elements in the cluster. The presence of the additional networks in an ANP approach made the decision making process much more transparent as it reflects more the real life decision making
