Description
Summary:An anacardic acid derivative of Thiazolidinedione was synthesized. The preparation of the target compound which may have potential activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and cancer cells involved the extraction of anacardic acid from cashew nutshell by base precipitation. The olefinic part of the isolated anacardic acid was cleaved and converted to an aldehyde precursor via performic acid epoxidation. The resulting 2-Hydroxy-6-(8-oxooctyl)benzoic acid was coupled with thiazolidine-2,4-dione via Knoevenagel Condensation. The characterizations of the precursor and target compounds were carried out using the ESI-MS and FTIR. Reactions were monitored via thin layer chromatography. The obtained results showed that the compound was successfully synthesized. However, the characterization made was incomplete. Further characterization via 1H and !3c nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS) and the testing for activity against cancer cells and Mycobacterium tuberculosis are recommended.
