A comparison of child rearing beliefs and practices among expatriate mothers and Filipino caregivers

This is a descriptive qualitative study comparing child-rearing beliefs and practices of expatriate mothers and Filipino caregivers and its perceived effects on the employer-employee relationship. The study utilized grounded theory in order to extract data strands and categories that would explain the similarities and differences of child-rearing beliefs and practices and the quality of employer-employee relationship. The in-depth interviews resulted into the different categories for child-rearing beliefs: goals, for child-rearing practices: physical care, social care, emotional care and personal convictions. In terms of the employer-employee relationship, the categories for both mother and caregiver resulted into: matters about children, working relationship and qualities of the nanny important to the mother. In turn, the beliefs and practices of expatriate mothers are given priority which serve as an aspect of the employer-employee relationship dynamic.
