A comparison of total serum IgE levels in adult asthmatic with or without other allergic diseases

The detection of allergen-specific IgE in the serum may be useful in diagnosing IgE antibody-mediated hypersensitivity such as asthma. Description
Summary:The detection of allergen-specific IgE in the serum may be useful in diagnosing IgE antibody-mediated hypersensitivity such as asthma. In this study, 50 subjects with asthma alone and 21 subjects with asthma and other allergies (aged 15 to 35 years, 25 males and 46 females), were tested for serum IgE levels with the purpose of determining whether the IgE levels of the two groups of subjects are significantly different. Radial Immunodiffusion using 14-well RID plates was employed to quantitate IgE levels. Data were analyzed using two-tailed t-test. The mean total concentration of IgE of the 50 asthmatic subjects without other allergies was 471.2 IU/ml and that of the 21 subjects with asthma and other allergies was 404.05 IU/ml, showing no statistically significant difference between the two values (a = 0.05). The results show that the IgE levels of asthmatics without other allergies may be lower or higher, than the IgE level will not be helpful in diagnosing presence of other compounding allergic diseases in asthmatics.
