The experiences of adolescent amputees living with disability

The objective of this study is to describe the experiences of adolescent amputers in living with their disability. Specifically, it describes how adolescent amputees adjusted following their amputation and explores the protective factors that help them in their adjustment. Participants in this study were 10 Filipinos adolescent amputees. The participants were from Philippine Orthopedic Center, School for the Crippled Children, and Bahay Mapagmahal in Quezon City. Qualitative approach was used in the study while qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the interview data. Based on the findings, 5 themes that are directly related to adjustment were identified. These are physical adjustment, social adjustment, and emotional adjustment, coping strategies, and protective factors. In conclusion, findings suggested though there have been reported negative feelings of adjustment, these amputees did not consider their disability as a hindrance in their life. Instead, they took it as a challenge in leading a positive and meaningful life.
