Summary: | This study was conducted to determine the level of academic achievement motivation of male and female Career Development Department (CDD) students, belonging to the high and middle socio-economic status with the aid of the Trait Survey. It also identified the motivating factors behind these working students the perceived advantages and disadvantages of working while studying and their coping mechanisms through the interview method. Descriptive type of research was employed and the subjects were gathered through non-probability sampling. Sixty freshmen students enrolled in the CDD were randomly selected to participate in the study. Later, twelve subjects were randomly chosen for the interview to answer the sub-problems. Findings revealed that there is a significant difference between high and middle socio-economic status. However, there is no significant difference between the male and female's level of academic achievement motivation. Content analysis of the interview showed that CDD students are motivated to study and work at the same time for career advancement. The major difficulty they encountered is that they lack time for relaxation, while the main advantage is that they can apply what they learn in school to work and vice versa. Time management is their means of coping. In conclusion, middle socio-economic status CDD students have a higher academic achievement motivation as compared to high socio-economic status CDD students. However, the gender of CDD students does not affect their level of academic achievement motivation because there is only a slight difference between the two. CDD students are motivated to study and work at the same time, even though they faced some difficulties because it is outweighed by the benefits they attain. Furthermore, they were able to develop an effective coping strategy. |
