Katorpehan: A phase experienced by Filipino adolescent males in the process of courtship

Over the years there has been little research done in the area that covers the difficulties of initiating courtship. This is a descriptive-exploratory study that focuses on the experience of katorpehan of adolescent males. It utilized content analysis of data gathered from four focus group discussions that were participated in by twenty adolescent males aged between 17 and 21 that were sampled through chain-referral. The findings revealed that individuals who are considered torpe are romantic idealists who suffer from poor social performance in courtship and unrequited romantic affection because of inherent or selective shyness, fear of rejection and loss, and limited knowledge of the process of courtship. It was also revealed that katorpehan is a necessary phase wherein one learns the rudiments of courtship.
