Idealized beauty, tendency to be influenced by external factors and self-esteem: On youth's body satisfaction

Past studies have proven that idealized beauty, socio-cultural factors and self-esteem affect one's body satisfaction. The researchers investigated as to which factor (idealized beauty, external factors and self-esteem) significantly contribute to body satisfaction. Three hypotheses were formed. First, the more one identifies with the idealized beauty, the lower one's body satisfaction. Second, the greater the influence of external factors is, the lower one's body satisfaction. Third, the higher one's self-esteem is, the higher one's body satisfaction. A Body Satisfaction scale, was distributed to 150 participants, aged 15-24 from different high schools and colleges. Through multiple regression analysis, the three factors are found to be significant predictors of body satisfaction but only hypothesis 2 and 3 are supported.
