Cylindrical briquettes of three different sizes were produced out of ground rice hulls using starch as the binder and a piston-type manually-operated briquettor as the press. Three types of briquettes were experimentally studied: (a) pure rice hulls, (b) NaCI-treated, and (c) NazCO3-treated rice hulls. The combustion behavior of rice hulls are monitored and plotted using thermogravimetric methods (Thermogravimetry, Derivative Thermogravimetry, Differential Thermal Analysis). From these plots the rate of reaction and the activation energies were determined using both the Newkirk and the Coats and Redfern method. The variation of temperatures of the briquettes is plotted with time to determine the relative stability of each briquettes. Heat recovery measurements were conducted using 2 kg of water placed on aluminum utensil.
