Summary:Two-year old Coffea excelsa and one-year old Coffea robusta seedlings were subjected to varying levels of water stress. Leaf area, stomatal width and length were measured and chlorophyll and nitrogen content were determined. The data gathered were analyzed using one way ANOVA at 1 percent and 5 percent levels of significance in a completely randomized design. As water stress is prolonged a decrease in all parameters, except stomatal length, was observed. Based on the Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT), the mean percent nitrogen and chlorophyll content obtained for the control and three-day water stress in Coffea excelsa were not significantly different. For Coffea robusta, mean nitrogen content and stomatal length and width were also not significantly different. Five, seven and nine-day stress were considered to be detrimental.
