A. Isolation of oil. The best method for the isolation of anise oil, to be used as an undergraduate experiment, is steam distillation of one-week dried leaves. The factors considered in the choice of the best method are (1) percent yield, (2) time required for the complete distillation of oil, and (3) ease of preparation. The oil isolates were separated by chromatography and the major component was identified as anethole by infrared spectroscopy. B. TLC Analysis of analgesic drugs. The best solvent system is to be used for an undergraduate experiment on the TLC analysis of analgesic drugs is ethyl acetate. The factors considered in the choice of solvent are (1) efficiency and good results, (2) cost, and (3) ease of preparation. TLC was used in verifying the components of the analgesic drugs as given in the manufacturer's literature.
