Summary: | The present condition of Philippine nutrition is at a critical level. Official statistics show that two million pre-school children -- about one in every five -- are malnourished. In 1987, the government estimated that 72 percent of Filipino families live below the food threshold, meaning they did not have sufficient income to feed themselves. This fact is supported by the 1990 U.P. study conducted in Taytay, Rizal which found communities where the average per capita income ranged from only P4.00 to P7.50 daily, at a time when government estimates put the cost of a nutritionally adequate meal at P14.00 a day per person [CORO92].This alarming situation is continuously being aggravated by the lack of services of qualified and dedicated nutritionists hence, CALORIE MAN was primarily developed to answer this growing demand.CALORIE MAN was basically patterned on the work of a nutritionist. It was designed to represent human expertise in the field of Nutrition it has no intention of replacing real experts but merely to supplement the supply of nutritionists. CALORIE MAN is composed of three modules: the Menu Planning Module, the Digestive System Module, and the Database Maintenance Module. The Menu Planning Module is primarily involved in the planning of a menu for the user. Menus are given based on the user's dietary needs and food preferences while giving importance on food variety. The Digestive Diary Module allows the user to make a list consisting of the foods eaten and the corresponding reactions. |
