Summary:In groups, the performance of an individual is influenced by other people's performance and behavior. The individual may display a decrease in effort due to the exposure to Social Loafers (Sucker-Effect) or may work harder and carry the group on the task (Social Compensation). The aim of the study to identify the effects of perceived social loafing to the performance of the high performing students. Through an experiment, wherein 40 participants (20 males and 20 females) were selected by their cumulative grade point average validated through their My La Salle Accounts were qualified as high performing students. The selected participants were then placed in two (2) different group settings, wherein they were grouped with social loafers and average students, who were confederates. After finishing the group task, the high performing student and the confederates answered a self-assessment survey which indicated whether the high-performing student exhibited sucker-effect or social compensation. After which, a face-to-face interview was conducted. The results indicated that there was no difference between the effect on the manipulation to both genders. In the quantitative data is showed that the participants played the sucker effect while on the qualitative data it showed that they compensated for their group.
