Summary:For Grand International Airways, the flight schedule is the central element of its planning process, aimed at optimizing the deployment of its resources in order to meet demands and maximize profits. The success/profitability of its operations is greatly influenced by the schedule of flights that it offers to the travelling public. However, the flight scheduling procedure of Grand Air has inefficiencies that result to the numerous revisions made to the projected flight schedule. For the periods July to September 1997 and February to May 1998, changes were made to 21.9% of the flights in the projected schedule prior to their execution. The 97 memos regarding flight schedule revisions released on the above mentioned periods reflect these changes. Changes were in the form of utilization of other aircraft, change of the published departure time to an earlier or later time, cancellation of flights, merging of flights and transfer of passengers to other flights. The assignment of flights to grounded aircraft/s, which did not return as expected, assignment of flights to aircraft/s due for maintenance check, miscommunication between Maintenance and Reservations and trial and error scheduling have been evaluated as the true causes of the problem. As such, the proponents have created a scheduling division, improved the information-feedback mechanism for the scheduling system and developed a scheduling program to address the above mentioned causes and, ultimately, the scheduling problem. After performing a cost-benefit analysis, it has been found that the proposal will benefit Grand Air, as reflected in the net profit of Php 3,389,943 that will be gained when the proposal is implemented.
