What keeps them in the game?: A study of motivators and the effects of gambling among college students

The phenomenon of gambling, specifically sports betting was the subject of this study focusing on the motivators and the perceived effects that it had on students. The motivators were divided into two factors, namely intrinsic and extrinsic motivators and the perceived effects of gambling were divided into two factors namely academic performance and physical health. Semi-structured interview method was conducted among twenty-one participants from different universities in Metro Manila using the purposive sampling method. The most common motivators that emerged from the interviews were money, thrill and excitement, and fun. The perceived effects of gambling in general were addiction and perceived negative effects on academic performance and health.
