Description
Summary:The purpose of this paper was to study the effect of replacing natural aggregate with crushed waste glass. The waste glass was substituted to replace fine aggregate with percentage substitution as 25, 50, 75 and 100%. It was crushed manually and sieved to attain uniform size. Three types of glasses were used clear, bronze and bottle glasses. The addition of fly-ash was also investigated to counteract the effect of the Alkali-Silica Reactivity (ASR), which causes premature cracking of concrete. Using the mortar bar method (ASTM C1260), the expansion of concrete was measured to analyze the effect of the ASR on the specimens. The study showed that increasing the substitution of crushed glass resulted to decreasing strength of concrete. The addition of fly-ash decreased the effect of the ASR and thus resulted to higher strength.
