Istambay is phenomenon that is relatively rampant here in the Philippines and it is defined as a person who willingly chooses to be inactive from school or work. These people are perceived mainly spend their time doing chores, hanging out with friends, or looking for a raket that will provide for them during the day. With this, the researchers then tried to investigate the possible reasons that may have led the respondents to choose to remain inactive. While literature attributes it to socioeconomic reasons, the study showed that several developmental factors that attributed to their internalization as an istambay. These factors were identified as (1) experience of familial stress, (2) support of delinquent peers, (3) experience of rejection, and (4) self conceptualization of istambay. Notable factor that emerged was experience of rejection leading to their state of being an istambay. Their rejection experiences had affected their self-esteem and self concept the co-occurrence the other of the external factors contribute to the development of an istambay. It harnessed the internalization of an istambay. The study showed that istambay phenomenon is not simply a choice but due to the development experiences that they encounter. These findings would help explain and create support to have successful employment and career planning.
