You think this is funny?!: Analyzing the emotional response of the audience on insult humor in noontime shows

Previous research on Philippine humor failed to address specifically the insult humor so prevalent in local context. This study seeks to bridge a knowledge gap on the taste of the local audience for insult humor. Focus group discussions were conducted with audiences of a local noontime show known for a liberal employment of insult humor on the participants of the show. Subsequent examinations of the focus group discussions show certain themes dominant in the collected transcripts, namely, Techniques, Acceptance, and Source of Relief under Internal Processes. Insult Humor as Source of Amusement, Perceptions of Superiority and Bluntness in Delivering Jokes under Perception of the Audience on Insult Humor, and Culture and Accustomed to Humor Style under Insult Humor Dominant in Philippine Media. The results indicated that contrary to previous studies, insult humor elicits a positive emotional response from the audience, instead of having a negative effect on them. Numerous possible explanations as to why such results came about are discussed.
