Egg grabbing guided sorter: an automated egg sorting system

Many egg sorting machines used in the industry use weight based sorting. These machines use purely mechanical systems, w/some exceptions which use few electronics. In view of a new and more versatile system, a different approach in egg sorting is implemented in this Egg Grabbing Guided Sorter (E.G.G.S.) thesis which applies robotic technology and computer automation. The E.G.G.S. system is composed of a conveyor for egg transport, a computer vision system which recognizes and sorts the eggs, and a computer controlled robot arm that places the eggs in their respective bins. The conveyor is equipped with an infrared sensor for presence detection. The vision system recognizes as egg by template matching and determines sizes by computing the egg's viewable area in pixels. The robot is a cylindrical type capable of four degrees of freedom with a position feedback.
